The scene was filmed at Big Bend Ranch State Park - a 311,000-acre (126,000 ha) state park located on the Rio Grande River in Brewster and Presidio counties, Texas. It is the largest state park in Texas. This location is named for its unique geological features called "hoodoos." The Hoodoo Trail is located about 26 miles west of the Barton Warnock Visitor Center and 22 miles east of Fort Leaton State Historic Site on FM 170. The word "hoodoo" originated in Africa and referred to rock structures with strange animal shapes in which evil spirits were embodied. Hoodoos are also called "fairy chimneys" due to their whimsical shapes. In other parts of the Southwest, they are called "goblins."

The scene was filmed at Pedernales Falls State Park, located 10 miles (16 km) east of Johnson City. Until 1970, the area now occupied by Pedernales Falls State Park was a working ranch known as the Circle Bar Ranch. The state of Texas acquired the land for the park in 1970, and the park opened in 1971.
