The virus is RNA-containing. These are naturally more stable viruses.
The key receptor for pathogenic hantaviruses to enter human cells are β3-integrins, which are present on the surface of vascular endothelial cells, platelets, and macrophages.

However, it is necessary to understand the types of the virus. One can divide them by geography of their natural presence, manifestations of infection, and affected organs. Alternatively, one can sequentially read the genome and accurately determine the strain identity.

Hantavirus 1.
In Russia, the picture is as follows: hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is the main confirmed clinical form of hantavirus infection in the country, and the epidemiological situation remains endemic in many regions. That is, there is a risk of infection. Several significant hantaviruses have been described for Russia: Puumala, Dobrova-Belgrade, Seoul, and Hantaan; Puumala is considered the most common and usually causes a milder course, while other variants can cause more severe disease. This is important because "confirmed hantavirus" in everyday news often means confirmed HFRS, not a single universal virus. Infection occurs from rodents, and contact with dust containing remnants of animal biological material is sufficient. Human-to-human transmission has not been recorded, meaning there is no risk of an HFRS pandemic.

In hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, initially there is general malaise, and then the following increase:
lower back pain, feeling of heaviness in the kidney area;
decreased urine volume, urine may be bloody or noticeably foamy;
elevated creatinine levels, decreased platelet count, sometimes hemorrhages into the skin and conjunctiva

What is known from the numbers:
In 2023, the Russian Federation registered 5,093 cases of HFRS, which corresponds to 3.47 per 100,000 population; incidence was noted in 7 of 8 federal districts. The same publication indicates a fatality rate of 0.49% and 25 deaths.

The most epidemically active foci are located in the European part of Russia, Western Siberia, and the Far East; in different years, European foci accounted for 80–95% of cases. Sources specifically highlight high incidence in the Volga Federal District.

Hantavirus 2.
The only reliably documented rare human-to-human transmission is the Andes virus (South American hantavirus), within outbreaks in Argentina and Chile. This type causes hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS). This form affects the lungs, triggers heart failure, and disrupts platelet function and thus coagulation.
This is what is happening to patients on the ship, and now a little beyond it.
A large amount of virus is needed to start infection in another person, which is possible with close contact. Enclosed spaces, such as the interior of a passenger ship or aircraft, concentrate the virus and increase the risk of infection.

The genome of the hantavirus from the ship has already been published. There are no signs of genetic insertions or fragments of other viruses. This clearly confirms a non-human, natural origin. There is no conspiracy. There are no secret laboratories either.

To date, 11 people have been infected (only that many).

There is no risk of a pandemic from hantavirus.
