🆘 WHO declares Ebola outbreak in Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern

Yesterday, Sunday, the WHO declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern — the highest level of alert for the organization.

As of now, more than 300 suspected cases and 88 deaths have been recorded in the two countries.

According to the organization's assessment, the outbreak is "potentially significantly larger than is currently being detected and reported."

The outbreak, whose epicenter is in the remote Ituri province in northeastern Congo, is caused by the Bundibugyo ebolavirus — a rare strain for which there are no approved vaccines or treatments.
