⚡️ Japan Raises El Niño Probability to 90% Amid Threat of 'Super' Event
Japan Meteorological Agency: the probability of El Niño developing by summer in the Northern Hemisphere is 90% - 2026 could become one of the strongest El Niño events in over a hundred years.
The last El Niño, which lasted from mid-2023 to early 2024, contributed to 2024 being the hottest year on record and the first to exceed the 1.5°C warming threshold set by the Paris Agreement.
The impending El Niño could become the strongest in modern observational history and may surpass the catastrophic event of 1877–1878, which caused widespread famine.
