The scene was filmed like all of Ancient Rome at Fort Ricasoli, which is located in Malta. It is one of the largest forts in the region. However, it is in a somewhat different state than shown in the film. To restore the fort, many statues were placed, a road was built, and necessary buildings were added. In total, all the changes cost almost a million dollars.

General Maximus's Home

The scene where the tired General Maximus rides home after a great battle to rest a little and see his wife and son. He walks through a wheat field and runs his hand through the ears of grain.

In Reality

The scene was filmed in a wheat field near the small Italian village of San Quirico d'Orcia, specifically at the farm Jenna Borborni Maria Eva. It was chosen for its excellent view and endless fields that needed to be shown in the frame, as well as the large farmhouse that architecturally perfectly suited the Roman era.

Locally it was called The Clumps and was known as such until the Forestry Commission changed the name in the 1950s.
