Filming took place entirely in the USA. The creators needed quite diverse landscapes and several buildings in the style of that era. Therefore, they had to use several movie ranches - these are like studios with large territories where sets are built and used for many films, often these are sets for westerns. Filming also took place in the deserts of California.

Schultz and Django's Night Camp

In the Movie

The scene where Big Daddy, played by Don Johnson, leads a large Ku Klux Klan posse tracking Django and Schultz. They watch them at night and wait for the bounty hunters to fall asleep at their camp to attack them. But first, they are delayed arguing about why the hoods are so poorly sewn. Interestingly, Don Johnson also plays a man in a KKK costume in the series "Watchmen."

In Reality

The scene was filmed at the Big Sky Ranch in California. It was one of the most large-scale and complex shoots, with over 30 people on horses in complete darkness.

Saloon

In the Movie

The scene where Django and Dr. King Schultz arrive at a saloon, wait for the local sheriff, kill him, then calmly sit back at their table and wait for the federal marshal to prove that the man was not a sheriff but a fugitive criminal with a bounty.

In Reality

The scene was filmed at Melody Ranch movie ranch - there was already a small Wild West town built, as well as a suitable saloon. As you understand, everything we see in this scene is a set. This location was also used for filming "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," the series "The Wild West" seasons 1 and 2, and the series "Deadwood."

Desert

In the Movie

The scene where Django and other slaves walk through the desert under the escort of armed guards on horseback. Later, when they reach a frosty forest, Dr. Schultz rides up in his dental wagon to ask if any of the slaves are from the Carrucan plantation.

In Reality

The scene was filmed in the deserts of California, west of the town of Lone Pine. This location was very suitable for the scene, as it is a desert near the mountains and its rocky landscapes were perfect for the slaves' arduous journey.
