The series is based on the cycle of stories «Chronicles of the Detective» by Nizhny Novgorod writer Nikolai Svechin and tells about the investigation of crimes in Nizhny Novgorod at the end of the 19th century. The main roles are played by Dmitry Nagiev, Pyotr Rykov, Roman Mayakin and Alexander Lykov. The plot unfolds in 1895, when Nizhny Novgorod is preparing for the biggest event — the Nizhny Novgorod Fair. However, the peaceful life of the city is disrupted by the murder of the leader of the provincial nobility, Nefedyev. The local detective Alexei Lykov is to solve this crime. In the process of investigation, he encounters forces of evil that exceed his imagination and is forced to stake everything — love, honor and even his own life. The main filming took place in Nizhny Novgorod, where the events of the series unfold, but some scenes were filmed in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kostroma and the Moscow region. General producer Mikhail Pogosov noted: «Nizhny Novgorod is an ideal place for the implementation of cinematic ideas. I was especially impressed by one of the estates, which set the tone for the entire series. Nizhny opened up to me from a new side, and I realized that it will forever remain in my heart».
