The film is a loose adaptation of the life and tragic downfall of a rock superstar, inspired by the real story of Janis Joplin. During a tour, she falls in love with a limousine driver from Houston, who tries to pull her away from the destructive path of drugs, alcohol, and reckless behavior. The film culminates in a devastating concert in her hometown, where she collapses and dies on stage from a drug overdose right in front of her home crowd. Bette Midler delivers a powerful lead performance, for which she received an Academy Award nomination.
