The film is set in New York and tells the story of an Indian Bengali family adjusting to life in America. Ashima, a young Bengali woman, accepts a marriage proposal from Ashoke, a student living abroad, and moves with him to New York in 1977. A death in the family forces him to confront his unusual name and the legacy behind it, while Ashima makes her own decisions about where to live when she finally has a choice.
