At the center of the story is a wealthy woman trapped in a traditional family life, who gradually becomes attached to a reclusive neighbor with a rare disease. Their bond draws her to people living outside polite society, forcing her to question comfort, status, and her own identity, while her marriage and daily routines begin to crumble.
