The creation story of the cult film was not easy and began with a long search for locations. Initially, filming was planned in Tajikistan, but after a devastating earthquake, the locations became inaccessible. For almost three months, the crew searched for a suitable place in Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine, Crimea, and the Moscow region. Unexpectedly, the right atmosphere was found in Estonia when Andrei Tarkovsky came to Tallinn on other business. 25 kilometers from the city, on the Jägala River, abandoned power stations destroyed in 1941 were discovered. Their ruins were perfect for creating the film's mystical atmosphere. Additional scenes were shot near the railway bridge over the Pirita River, at a ship repair plant, an abandoned oil depot, a flour mill, and a power station in central Tallinn. Pavilion scenes and final episodes were filmed in Moscow.

The scene where a jeep rolls almost imperceptibly along rusty railway tracks, approaching a checkpoint. Around it is an abandoned industrial zone, covered in fog and overgrown with tall grass. Soldiers patrol the area, armed and alert, their silhouettes flickering among concrete fortifications. The driver keeps the car on a straight trajectory, trying not to attract attention. In the tense silence, only the screech of wheels on metal and distant sounds of loudspeakers are heard. The heroes – the Writer, the Professor, and the Stalker – hold their breath, watching every move of the guards. Suddenly, shots ring out, but the jeep, without slowing down, breaks through the checkpoint. Behind them remain shouts, the sound of sirens, and ahead – the unknown of the Zone, hidden in the fog.

In Reality

The scene was filmed on the outskirts of Tallinn, at 6 Rumbi Street. This is an industrial part of the city, located in the port area. Previously, there were various warehouses and industrial facilities, and railway tracks ran nearby. The buildings on this street feature rough brickwork, metal structures, and slightly weathered facades, creating a gloomy and somewhat abandoned atmosphere. The proximity to the Baltic Sea adds dampness and grayish hues to the landscape, and fog often settles here in bad weather. This makes the location ideal for filming with a noir, post-apocalyptic, or industrial aesthetic.

The Zone

The scene where the heroes reach the Zone on a motorized trolley along old, overgrown rails. Gradually, the surrounding environment changes – the rough industrial ruins are left behind, and ahead open up the wild, mysterious expanses of the Zone. Around them are thickets of tall grass, quietly lapping water, and dilapidated buildings swallowed by nature. They get out, look around, and for the first time in the film, something akin to peace is felt. This moment emphasizes the mysterious and mesmerizing atmosphere of the Zone, where reality seems different, incomprehensible.

In Reality

The scene was filmed on the banks of the Pirita River in Tallinn. The river winds through the city, creating green embankments popular among tourists and locals. Here you can find dense thickets of trees, calm waters reflecting the sky, and cozy paths along the shore. The place combines elements of wild nature and urban environment: bridges, old factories, and residential neighborhoods coexist with forest parks and quiet backwaters. This contrasting combination gave the scenes of the film 'Stalker' a special atmosphere – mysterious, post-industrial, and at the same time filled with natural tranquility.

Road to the Room

The scene where the travelers continue moving deeper into the Zone, approaching the mysterious Room. Soon they notice that the final goal is only a few hundred meters away. However, the Stalker insists that they cannot move directly towards it – in the Zone, the direct path is often the most dangerous. He demands that his companions strictly follow his instructions.

In Reality

The scene was filmed in a house in the village of Jägala-Joa, Estonia. The village of Jägala-Joa, located about 25 kilometers east of Tallinn, is known for its picturesque natural landscapes, dense forests, and one of Estonia's largest waterfalls – Jägala. The house chosen for filming is an old rural building with time-worn walls and a sloping roof. Its location among overgrown vegetation and uneven terrain gives the place an atmosphere of seclusion and mystery.
