The famous 1991 comedy starring Bill Murray was mostly filmed in the picturesque town of Moneta, Virginia, located on the shores of Smith Mountain Lake. Although the film's story takes place in the fictional town of Lake Winnipesaukee, the actual filming took place in Virginia from late August to November. Smith Mountain Lake, a 40-mile-long artificial lake formed by a dam on the Roanoke River, served as the backdrop for most of the film's action. The complex includes three parcels and 23 historic buildings. Today, the site continues to serve its original function, remaining part of Bedford's heritage.
