In Reality

The scene was filmed at Universal Studios. Given the number of scenes in all three films, across different historical eras and with stunts, it was easier to build and shoot on the lot than to constantly rent city squares. The set was preserved and is accessible to tourists.

Hill Valley High School

Scene where Marty arrives at school, talks to Jennifer, and is scolded by Mr. Strickland for being late.

In Reality

The scene was filmed at Whittier High School in West Los Angeles. The school sign was changed specifically for the filming.

The scene was filmed near a large wooden house on Bushnell Avenue in Los Angeles, in Pasadena. Incidentally, across from this house there is indeed a tree with a large branch that could easily accommodate an adult with binoculars.

The scene was filmed on the road along Vermont Hill. It does not lead to the square where Marty later arrives. The road was chosen because it is conveniently located in Los Angeles (no need to travel far), has many trees on the side, and is outside the city and not heavily used, making it very convenient for filming.
