In 1944, the airport began to expand significantly to support the war effort, but after the war ended, it was converted into a civilian airport. The original layout and terminals were designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd, and it is now one of the busiest airports in the world.

City Hall opened in 2002, two years after the formation of the GLA, and was designed by Norman Foster in a neo-futuristic style with a glass bulb. The main atrium features a 500-meter spiral walkway that rises through all ten floors, and the council chamber at the bottom is visible from any point in the atrium.
