The series "How I Met Your Mother" was filmed in Los Angeles and New York, USA. A feature of sitcoms is that they are usually filmed in the same locations, which are much easier to build on a studio lot and adapt to the plot than renting real places. The series was no exception - Ted's, Lily's, and Barney's apartments, the bar where friends meet - all are sets built on a studio lot, as well as part of the New York streets. Exceptions are some scenes at the university, on beaches, and streets of New York - if it's a "one-time" scene, it's easier to shoot on location.

Scene was filmed at A small state reserve located at the southernmost point of Malibu, quite popular among climbers looking for a relatively easy ascent. The point is clearly visible from the neighboring Westward Beach, which continues northwest to the more popular Zuma Beach.
