In January 2015, the building was demolished to make way for the City of the Arts complex, including condominiums, commercial offices, and educational space.

The house was bequeathed to the museum after the owner's death in 1911 and was significantly expanded over the century with more than half a dozen different additions. The latest expansion was led by architect Frank Gehry and included a new glass entrance on the north side of the building and a titanium and glass structure over Walker Court with its distinctive protruding staircase.
