The film was shot in New York City, USA, although in the book the action takes place in Los Angeles. Given that the director added half of the iconic locations to the film, which are recognizable at first glance, he wanted to show famous places empty and abandoned to further emphasize the devastation after the collapse of civilization. These were some of the largest-scale shoots in New York with street closures, which caused numerous protests among residents.

The scene was filmed at Although commonly known as Grand Central Station, the building has borne its current name since its construction in 1903, replacing the older Grand Central Depot. The terminal has 44 platforms, more than any other train station in the world, all underground and divided into two levels. The most famous part of the terminal is the cavernous Main Concourse, topped by an intricate astronomical ceiling mural created by architect Whitney Warren and artist Paul César Helleu.

The scene was filmed at A 6-acre park and square located between 5th and Madison Avenues, opened in 1847 and named after President James Madison. The park features art exhibitions, a Shake Shack café, a fountain, and an enclosed dog park. Madison Square Garden got its name from the park when its predecessor was located just north. At the southern end of the park stands the famous Flatiron Building, which gave rise to the Flatiron District.

Brooklyn Bridge

The scene where the military bombs the Brooklyn Bridge to cut off the infected. At that moment, the helicopter evacuating Robert Neville's (Will Smith) family crashes.

In Reality

The scene was filmed at The Brooklyn Bridge, which opened in 1883 as the New York and Brooklyn Bridge after fourteen years of construction. It was the world's first steel-wire suspension bridge, designed by John Augustus Roebling.

In Reality

The scene was filmed at Washington Square Park, a famous park in Greenwich Village, originally created in 1826 as a military parade ground. In 1850, the site was turned into a proper park, and in 1889, to commemorate the centennial of George Washington's inauguration, an arch was built in the style of the Arc de Triomphe. The fountain in the center of the park was built in 1852 and underwent a major renovation in 1934.
