In reality

The scene was filmed at Washington Square - a famous park in Greenwich Village, originally created in 1826 as a military parade ground for Washington. In 1850, a park was laid out on this site, and in 1889, to commemorate the centennial of George Washington's inauguration, an arch was built in the style of the Arc de Triomphe. The fountain in the center of the park was built in 1852 and underwent major renovations in 1934.
