The first was the Municipal Pier, built in 1909 to carry sewer pipes from the beach. The shorter Pleasure Pier was built in 1916 by Charles and Arthur Looff to house an amusement park. The distinctive entrance arch and bridge were built in 1938. The pier was acquired by the city in 1974 and saved from demolition thanks to a public campaign.
