The scene was filmed at Built in 1917, Parkwood Estate was the former home of GM of Canada founder Samuel McLaughlin. The McLaughlin family moved out in 1972, and in 1989 the estate became a historic site and is now a museum.

David Dunlap Observatory

The scene was filmed at The David Dunlap Observatory was built by the University of Toronto in 1935 and operated by them until 2008, when it was sold to the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, then resold in 2018 to the city of Richmond Hill for historic preservation. The main observatory houses a 74-inch telescope, the second largest in North America at the time of its installation. On top of the adjacent administration building are three additional domes that housed various telescopes over the years. Light pollution from growing development around the site and the relatively small size of the telescope eventually reduced its scientific usefulness.

The scene was filmed at The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres are the last surviving Edwardian theaters in the world. The theaters opened in 1913 as the flagship venue of Marcus Loew's theater chain and were designed by Thomas W. Lamb. The Elgin Theatre on the first level is decorated with gold and marble, with a domed ceiling, and seven floors above is the Winter Garden Theatre, covered with botanical murals, garden trellises, and columns made to look like tree trunks. The upper theater was closed in 1928 as the lower theater was converted for talkies, and the upper theater remained closed until the building was acquired by the Ontario Heritage Foundation in 1981.

The scene where Vanya is late for rehearsal and then has a tense conversation with another violinist in episode 1x03 "Extra Ordinary". Vanya auditions for first chair, and her performance unexpectedly affects the conductor in episode 1x05 "Number Five".

The scene was filmed at The building housing the Royal Conservatory of Music was built as McMaster Hall in 1890 for McMaster University. When the university moved to Hamilton in 1930, the building was sold to the University of Toronto, and in 1962 the Conservatory moved in. After a major renovation in 2008, Koerner Hall, seating over 1,000, was added to the back of the building.

The scene was filmed at Allan Gardens began its life as gardens and a conservatory created by the Toronto Horticultural Society in 1860 and fully transferred to the city in 1888. The park contains a conservatory known as the Palm House, consisting of six greenhouses built in 1910 after the old horticultural pavilion was destroyed by fire.

The scene was filmed at The school on Place Street opened in 1859, designed by architect Joseph Sheard, with about 180 students. After the school closed in 1887, the building was sold and turned into a hotel, called variously Irvine House, Cherry Street Hotel, and Eastern Star Hotel. After those hotels failed, the building sat vacant from 1910-22 when it was converted for industrial use. The Canary Restaurant began operating on the ground floor of the building in 1965 and kept its 1960s decor until its closure in 2007 due to declining patronage from area development.
