The scene was filmed at Beckton Gasworks was a large London gasworks built to produce coal gas and other products including coke from coal. It was called the largest gasworks in Europe. It operated from 1870 to 1976. The Vietnam scenes for the film were shot first, before the actors had to film boot camp. Matthew Modine said in an interview with The Guardian about the filming: "I was never sure why we shot the film in reverse order, but I knew we had to leave Beckton Gasworks by a certain date because it was scheduled for demolition."
