The scene was filmed The remains of the iconic train wreck from the movie "The Fugitive" can still be found rusting along the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. The scene was filmed on a section of the Smoky Mountain Railroad track using the most practical special effects - a real train and a real bus. The film was made long before CGI effects became standard in cinema, and instead of using miniatures, the filmmakers simply placed a full-size bus on the tracks of an oncoming freight train, letting physics do the rest. The impact nearly tore the bus in half, and the train derailed after the collision, leaving only twisted wreckage. Park on the shoulder of Haywood Road near the Jackson County Green Energy Park and look down the slope across the road to see the wreck.

Cheoah Dam helps form the long, narrow Cheoah Reservoir. The elevation of Cheoah Reservoir is 1,276.8 feet (389.2 m). When construction was completed, the 225-foot (69 m) dam was the tallest overflow dam in the world.

The hospital was rebuilt in 1916. The former Cook County Hospital building has been gutted and is currently being redeveloped into a private mixed-use development.
