The scene was filmed at Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park, a 932-acre (377-hectare) park located in the Sierra Pelona Mountains in northern Los Angeles County, California. It is widely known for its distinctive rock formations, which resulted from sedimentary layering and subsequent seismic uplift. The site's frequent use for filming—especially for the "Star Trek" franchise—has earned it the nickname "Kirk's Rock." These rock formations were formed by rapid erosion during uplift about 25 million years ago. Vasquez Rocks are named after the bandit Tiburcio Vásquez, who used these rocks as his hideout.
