The scene was filmed at Beards Hollow, located on Cape Disappointment on the Washington coast. On November 15, 1805, Captain Lewis reached the Pacific Ocean in the Beards Hollow area. Beards Hollow was named after Captain E.N. Beard, whose ship, the bark "Vandalia," was wrecked at the mouth of the Columbia River in 1853. The crew perished, and Captain Beard's body was found on the beach near the hollow.

Salvation Mountain

The scene was filmed at Salvation Mountain is a hillside visionary environment created by local resident Leonard Knight in the California desert. The artwork is made of adobe clay, straw, and thousands of gallons of lead-free paint. It includes numerous murals and areas painted with Christian sayings and Bible verses. Leonard Knight died on February 10, 2014, in El Cajon.

The scene was filmed at The real bus, the one Chris used in real life, stood on the Stampede Trail in Denali National Park, Alaska. The bus became a destination for hiking enthusiasts after the release of Jon Krakauer's book in 1996 and Sean Penn's film in 2007. The nearly 20-mile hike to the bus was often underestimated. It required hiking experience and proper preparation. The bus's GPS location was 63.868397, -149.769303. The bus was removed from the site in the summer of 2020. It found a new home at the Museum of the North in Fairbanks, Alaska. If you want to see the bus used in the film, you can visit 49th State Brewing Co in Healy, Alaska. They acquired the bus and parked it outside. Here are the GPS coordinates: 63.864050, -149.016785. Sean Penn filmed his version of the bus on the banks of the Jack River in Cantwell. This location is an approximate exact filming location.
