The scene was filmed at Shakespeare and Company - the name of two independent English-language bookstores that existed on the Left Bank of Paris. The first was opened by American Sylvia Beach on November 19, 1919 at 8 rue Dupuytren, and in 1922 moved to larger premises at 12 rue de l'Odéon in the 6th arrondissement.[1] In the 1920s, Beach's store was a meeting place for many aspiring writers such as Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemingway, Djuna Barnes, James Joyce, and Ford Madox Ford.
