The scene was filmed at Hoyt–Schermerhorn Streets is a station on the New York City Subway. Construction of the station began around 1929, and it opened to passengers on April 9, 1936. The station has appeared in various films and TV series, including "The Wiz," "Coming to America," "The Warriors," and the 2009 version of "The Taking of Pelham 123." After Michael Jackson's death in 2009, New York City Council member Letitia James advocated renaming the station after Jackson. Jackson filmed the music video for the song "Bad" at the station, directed by Martin Scorsese. James's proposal faced resistance. Other proposals to honor Michael Jackson were also rejected.

The neighborhood is named after Fort Washington, a fortification built at the highest natural point on Manhattan Island by Continental Army troops during the American Revolutionary War. Reddit user @jobuddy718 provided great information about the scene and its location: "The 'Carnaval del Barrio' courtyard is in the middle of the residential block between West 177th & 176th (north and south, respectively) and between Pinehurst & Haven Avenues (east and west) - definitely in Washington Heights (and yes, less than a block from J. Hood Wright Park), not Inwood. This courtyard is not publicly accessible; to get there in person, you must be a resident of one of the nearby buildings or have permission from one of them. The uneven sidewalk visible in the shot (above) is where a chain-link fence divides the courtyard into two separate areas belonging to two buildings on either side; this fence was removed for filming and replaced afterward. Thus, in the shot, Usnavi, Vanessa, and Daniela are technically/legally standing on the W 177th St side, while Carla and Graffiti Pete are on the W 176th side (or possibly vice versa). "On the fence," literally."

The scene was filmed at Cooper Triangle opened as a public space in 1850. At that time it was called Stuyvesant Square, although there was already a square with the same name. It was renamed after Peter Cooper, a 19th-century industrialist and philanthropist, after his death in 1883. There is also a small monument dedicated to Peter Cooper here.
