In Reality

The scene was filmed at Fontfroide Abbey was founded in 1093 by Aymeri I, Viscount of Narbonne. It remained poor and little-known, and Ermengarde, Viscountess of Narbonne, had to refound it. Originally a Benedictine abbey, it was incorporated into the Cistercian order in 1144-1145. It was dissolved in 1791 during the French Revolution. In 1858 it was refounded by monks from Sénanque Abbey. In 1901 the community was expelled from France. The premises passed into private hands in 1908 when artists Gustave and Madeleine Fayet d'Andoque bought it to protect the fabric of the buildings from an American collector of sculptures. They restored it over several years and used it as a center for artistic projects. It remains in private hands.

The scene was filmed at Château de Fénelon is a castle in the southeast of the French Dordogne. It is located on a hill, one kilometer east of the village of Sainte-Mondane. The oldest visible parts of the castle date from the 12th century. But as early as around 1000, a castle was built on this site.
