The scene was filmed at Shiprock is an isolated rock rising nearly 1,583 feet (482.5 m) above the desert plain of the Navajo Nation in New Mexico. Its summit elevation is 7,177 feet (2,187.5 m) above sea level. It is located about 10.75 miles (17.30 km) southwest of the town of Shiprock, which is named after the peak. The Navajo call the peak "rock with wings" or "winged rock," referring to the legend of a great bird that brought the Navajo from the north to their present lands. The name "Shiprock," Shiprock Peak, or Ship Rock comes from the resemblance of the peak to a huge 19th-century clipper ship. Americans first called the peak "The Needle" — so named for the very top by Captain J. F. McComb in 1860. Shiprock is a sacred mountain for the Navajo people.

The scene was filmed at White Sands National Monument is a U.S. national monument located in the state of New Mexico on the north side of Highway 70 about 16 miles (26 km) southwest of Alamogordo. The monument is situated at an elevation of 4,235 feet (1,291 m) in the mountain-ringed Tularosa Basin and is the southern part of a 275 sq mi (710 km2) field of white sand dunes composed of gypsum crystals. The gypsum dune field is the largest of its kind on Earth. The exact filming location is currently unknown.
