The scene was filmed in the building of the real Naval Training Center. The filmmakers wanted to preserve the historicity of the program, so they used real locations as much as possible. In 2000, the building was transferred to the Museum of Art.

The scene was filmed in the locker room of the Belmont amusement park. Obviously, the filmmakers wanted to shoot a large-scale scene, but the TOPGUN program didn't have enough pilots to build a big locker room. So the scene was filmed in an amusement park, where such facilities are very large and designed for hundreds of people.

Bar

Scene where The pilots relax at the bar, there's a lot of drinking and it's all very fun. Maverick and Goose try to seduce an unknown blonde by singing the song "You've Lost That Loving Feeling." It works and she notices them.

The scene was filmed in the bar of the Lafayette Hotel. The filmmakers needed a large bar to accommodate many people and show the numerous and strong brotherhood of pilots in the frame. A suitable size and layout of the bar counter was only found in the hotel.

Street

In the Movie

Scene where Charlie catches up with Maverick, risking her life by running red lights at several intersections. After catching up, she explains that all the criticism at the training center and this risky drive was to confess her love to him without arousing suspicion from the other pilots.

The scene was filmed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar—a United States Marine Corps installation. The base is best known as the former location of the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School (NFWS) and its TOPGUN training program. The volleyball scene in the film was shot on the sand courts. They no longer exist, but they were located north of barracks 298-300.
