The film "Waterworld" was filmed in Hawaii, USA, as well as on open water near the islands. This decision to shoot not in a studio pool but at sea was a huge mistake, about which director was warned by Steven Spielberg, who emphasized that it would be problematic and lead to budget overruns. And so it happened - huge and expensive sets were destroyed by a storm, the entire film crew suffered from heat and jellyfish that stung actors during filming, and constant rocking from waves and storms was exhausting. But at least we know for sure that it's not a pool, but location shooting at sea.

Scene where after correctly deciphering Enola's tattoo, the refugees understand where they need to sail to find the last available piece of land. They sail to the given coordinates and find a small island, which is the summit of Everest. But the Mariner cannot bear life on land and, after ensuring Enola is safe, sails away into the sea on his trimaran.

In Reality

The scene was filmed on the coastline of Waipiʻo Valley - a valley located in the Hamakua district on the Big Island of Hawaii. In Hawaiian, "waipi" means "curved water." The coastline in the valley is a black sand beach popular with surfers.
