The scene was filmed at Southfork Ranch - a conference and events center in Parker, Texas, USA, about 25 miles (40 km) north of Dallas. The ranch includes the Ewing mansion. The house was built in 1970 by Joe Duncan and was known as Duncan Acres, named after his family. Exterior filming was done on location from 1978 to 1989, although Lorimar Productions also built a studio mock-up of the ranch exterior (with pool) in California in 1978 to use when weather conditions made location shooting in Texas impractical. From 1989, production of the series moved entirely to a studio in California.
