The scene was filmed at Cape Campbell Lighthouse, a lighthouse on Cape Campbell in the Marlborough region of New Zealand's South Island. It is owned and operated by Maritime New Zealand. The original lighthouse at this site was first lit on August 1, 1870. However, that lighthouse was built of wood, and in 1898 it was discovered that the timbers were rotting. This led to the construction of the current cast-iron tower, which began operation in October 1905. Originally, the light was oil-powered. In 1938, the oil lamp was replaced with an electric light powered by a local diesel generator. Subsequently, in the 1960s, it was replaced by a connection to the electrical grid. In 1986, the light was fully automated and is now controlled from a control room in Wellington.
