The filming of «Gentlemen of Fortune» took place in Moscow and Uzbekistan. The filmmakers chose Tashkent for its oriental flavor, which suited the prison and escape scenes. In the capital, they filmed scenes in the kindergarten, at Professor Maltsev's dacha, and other Moscow episodes. The film features such famous Tashkent locations as the central Khadra Square, the Sheikhantaur architectural ensemble, and a high-security prison that played the role of the colony. The kindergarten scenes were shot at a preschool in Moscow. The filmmakers managed to convey the atmosphere of the 70s and create vivid character images through careful location selection.

The scene was filmed in Moscow, in an ordinary residential building at 49 Vernadsky Avenue. The residential building at 49 Vernadsky Avenue is an apartment building where people live their daily lives. This location is suitable for the scene with Troshkin's house because it creates an atmosphere of seclusion and tranquility that the hero needs for rest and recovery. In addition, filming in a residential building adds realism and authenticity to the events.

The scene was filmed Troshkin's arrival at the kindergarten was filmed in this very building because the film's director lived in the area of Vernadsky Avenue and its surroundings and loved these places very much. The kindergarten was located at 31 Udaltsova Street. The house at 49 Vernadsky Avenue, where Troshkin lived, was literally 200 meters from the kindergarten, but it is shown that the main character got there by public transport. The filmmakers shot the episode in such a way that viewers got the impression that Troshkin worked quite far from home. Otherwise, Professor Maltsev would not have been able to accidentally meet Evgeny Ivanovich on the bus and track him to the kindergarten, which would have led to an inconsistency in the scene.

Near the Monument to the "Man in a Jacket"

Scene where the heroes of the film «Gentlemen of Fortune» stand near the monument to Lermontov, takes place on the square at the Krasnye Vorota metro station at 2 Krasnovorotsky Proezd, now Lermontovsky Square. The filming took place there because the monument served as a landmark for the film crew: it was erected shortly before the start of filming opposite the site where the famous poet's house on Kalanchevskaya Street used to be.

The scene was filmed in what is now Lermontovsky Square in Moscow. It is this sculpture (the monument to Lermontov) that appears in the film as the famous «man in a jacket». Saveliy Kramarov's character tried to explain to a Moscow taxi driver where to take the film's heroes — «well, there's also a man in a jacket». And in response to the driver's clarification — «Is he sitting?» (i.e., whether the statue is depicted in a sitting position or not) the escaped Soviet criminal condescendingly uttered a phrase that became part of folklore — «Who would put him in prison? He's a monument...»
