Although a significant part of the film takes place in Venezuela, the filming was mainly done in California and Los Angeles. For example, in one particularly memorable scene, Joe sees a bus submerged in a Venezuelan river and jumps straight into the water flow. Instead of Venezuela, this scene was filmed on the Middle Fork American River in Northern California, a place known for its strong rapids with turbulent water. Other scenes set in South America were filmed at the Los Angeles County Arboretum, while waterfall footage was shot on the island of Kauai in Hawaii.
