In April 1998, the film's crew began work in Washington, which ultimately lasted over a year. Most of the time was spent building the Victorian Owens house. Although the action takes place in New England, the producers settled on Whidbey Island and San Juan Island in Washington state. The producers chose Whidbey Island as the filming location because of its 19th-century atmosphere. Decades later, the coastal village of Coupeville, where filming also took place, continues to uphold the magical tradition and celebrate the anniversary of the witch film's release.

Scene where the Owens sisters make a blood pact, saying "my blood, your blood, our blood." Gillian decided to go to Los Angeles and promised on blood that she and her sister would grow old together and leave this world on the same day.

In Reality

The scene was filmed outside an old Victorian-style mansion that was specially built for the film on San Juan Island, Washington. It took six months to landscape the area and build the sets. The crew was not allowed to dig into the ground, so the residence was built on giant platforms.

Scene where the family curse takes the life of Sally's husband. Grief-stricken, she goes to the house where her aunts live and asks them to bring Michael back. The aunts convince her that it is impossible to bring a man back from the dead; he would be a different person.

In Reality

The scene was filmed on a soundstage in Los Angeles. Since the film set of "Practical Magic" on San Juan Island was just an empty shell, the film crew shot interior scenes in the studio. The creators used wooden panels for the staircase and foyer to give the house a Victorian look. Even the wallpaper was important to the story. The aunts, who loved nature, inspired the set decorators to create a wall design with birds and vines.

Scene where Sally sees her daughters being teased on the street by a group of children calling them "witches." Sally immediately goes outside to protect her children. She stands in front of them, shielding them from the crowd of bullies. One of the daughters extends a finger and curses the boy with chickenpox.

In Reality

The scene was filmed near a store that had a sign reading "Sally Owens Botanicals." Now a bakery called "Little Red Hen" has opened in its place. You can find various types of fresh pastries there and just relax with your family.
