The crime drama was filmed in the Los Angeles area, Tujunga, and Sacramento. Director Tim Hunter settled on several locations in Sacramento due to the abundance of natural settings that would help bring the film's scenes to life. Flooding forced the production crew to stop filming on the American River. Hunter then moved to the foothills above Burbank, in the Sunland-Tujunga community, for the remaining scenes of 'River's Edge'.
