Despite the film's action taking place in Washington, D.C. and its surroundings, the production team decided to choose locations mainly in Los Angeles. Some shots were filmed in the District of Columbia, particularly in the Georgetown area, but the film was mostly shot in Los Angeles. The most interesting thing about this film is that it was the first to use fully digital production design. This meant that the futuristic shots that director Steven Spielberg envisioned for the film could truly be brought to life. There is also a selection of filming locations in rural Virginia, which have the secluded atmosphere needed for scenes where Anderton is on the run. It really contrasts with the shiny futuristic elements of the city scenes and shows a kind of «before and after» of John's journey.
Filming Locations:
Police Station
In the Movie

The scene where Police Captain Anderton, as usual, reviews the precog's report on a committed crime. Suddenly, in the report, he sees himself. Anderton realizes that he is next on the wanted list, and this character Crow, whom he supposedly shot, is his victim. But who is this guy? Anderton has no idea, and he has only 36 hours to figure everything out and change his fate.
In Reality

The scene was filmed at the Angelus Plaza residential complex, located in the Little Tokyo district of Los Angeles. This former apartment building is just a stone's throw from the Grand Central Market, so you can visit this filming location and grab a bite to eat at the same time.
Underground Clinic
In the Movie

The scene where Anderton goes on the run from the Precrime department, he hides in alleys and seedy parts of the city, trying to keep a low profile. Since in this society everything is tracked via retinal scanning, John knows he needs to change his eyes. He decides to undergo a dubious operation in an underground clinic.
In Reality

The scene was filmed at the Eldorado Loft residential complex, not far from the previous location. The residential complex is a former hotel in Los Angeles. Since the building has been renovated, it is very different from the shabby (pardon the bluntness) apartment building you see in the film.
Ballroom
In the Movie

The scene where at a gala event, Lamar receives a call from John, who takes control of the screens and sound in the hall, telling everyone about his terrible deeds. 'Hello, Lamar, I just wanted to congratulate you, you did it. You created a world without murder, and all you had to do was kill someone for it.' This is the retribution that Lamar fully deserves, and it is the perfect climax of the film.
In Reality

The scene was filmed in the Willard Room of the Willard Washington hotel. This scene is one of the few that were filmed in Washington, D.C. Located across the street from the U.S. Treasury Department and next to the White House, it is one of the most popular hotels in the country, used for glamorous galas and events year-round.
