The film was shot at facilities of the Red Banner Northern Fleet in Severomorsk, Zaozersk, and other locations in the Murmansk region, as well as in Tula and Moscow. In Severomorsk and Zaozersk, wide shots of a submarine and a military town were filmed, after which work continued in the capital. The plot unfolds during the Cold War. A Russian missile submarine cruiser disappears without a trace in the Greenland Sea, and the command sends Northern Fleet officer Viktor Voronin to search for it. In northern waters, the crew encounters an unknown sea creature, turning the operation into a fight for survival.

The main feature of Zaozersk is the naval base where submarines dock. Huge docks, hangars, and piers create an authentic location for filming scenes related to the fleet, military operations, and the harsh life in a northern garrison.
