The 2007 film was primarily shot in the scenic landscapes of Minden and Shreveport, Louisiana. At the time of filming, Louisiana was recovering from the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Filming began on February 6, 2006, and lasted 45 days. Some scenes, such as those in the emergency room, were filmed in an abandoned intensive care unit on the second floor, adding a special atmosphere to the film. Also, some interior scenes were shot at the newly built sound stages of the Louisiana Institute of Film Technology, known as Film Factory. Most exterior scenes were filmed in Shreveport, a bustling city in the northwestern part of the state, as well as in the Highland and South Highlands neighborhoods. The fictional U.S. Highway 57 "east-west" shown in the film is actually Louisiana Highway 2, and the key car crash scene involving Jim was filmed at the intersection of Louisiana Highway 2 and Webb Country Road in Claiborne Parish.
