Principal photography of the iconic film began in April 2007 in Los Angeles and Wellington. James Cameron envisioned the film as a unique blend of live actors and computer graphics, aiming to create a world where viewers could not distinguish reality from digital elements. Even before the main work began, he spent four months refining secondary scenes to achieve maximum visual realism. The filming used an enhanced 3D Fusion Camera System, refined by Cameron himself and Vince Pace. In the end, about 60% of the film consists of computer effects, while the remaining 40% are live-action shots and miniature sets. The filming took place on the studio lots of Hughes Aircraft in Playa Vista (Los Angeles) and Stone Street Studios (Wellington). Over a thousand specialists worked on the film, and the actors underwent intensive training, including archery, horseback riding, hand-to-hand combat, and learning the specially developed Na'vi language. To better immerse themselves in the atmosphere of an unknown world, Cameron sent the actors to the tropical forests of Hawaii, where they studied nature and absorbed the ambiance that would later be recreated on screen. The spectacular landscapes of Pandora were inspired by real places around the world. Among them are the majestic cliffs of China's Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and the picturesque coastline of the Big Island of Hawaii, which gave the film its unique visual style.
