Alejandro González Iñárritu won the Academy Award for Best Director for 'The Revenant', and Emmanuel Lubezki was awarded for Best Cinematography. From the very beginning, Iñárritu firmly adhered to the idea that the film should be as realistic as possible, so the filming took place not in a studio in front of a green screen, but on location, in the wild. Most of the scenes were shot in Kananaskis Country, Alberta (Canada) — a picturesque mountainous area west of Calgary. Its harsh, majestic landscapes perfectly conveyed the atmosphere of the film. However, some episodes were filmed in other locations. For example, the scene of the bear attack on Leonardo DiCaprio's character was shot in British Columbia, and the dramatic episode with the swift current was filmed at Kootenai Falls in Montana. When the snow unexpectedly melted in Alberta, the final fight had to be shot in Argentina, near the city of Ushuaia — the southernmost settlement in South America.

The scene where during the war with the Arikara, Glass leads a group of hunters. While he and his son Hawk are busy hunting, their camp is suddenly attacked by Arikara warriors. They are trying to reclaim their kidnapped tribeswoman, the daughter of Chief Powaku. In a fierce battle, many hunters are killed, and the survivors are forced to flee, sailing away in a boat.

In Reality

The scene was filmed in the Stoney 142, 143, 144 Indian reserve, located near Morley, about 70 kilometers west of Calgary in Canada. Surrounded by majestic mountain landscapes and dense forests, this location perfectly conveys the harsh and pristine nature shown in the film. This scene required many rehearsals to ensure that the carefully choreographed chaos was perfectly captured on screen.

Forest

The scene where while hunting in the forest wilderness, Glass encounters an enraged she-bear protecting her cubs. The attack becomes a brutal, merciless fight in which the man is completely defenseless against the forces of wild nature. Every movement of the beast is a powerful blow, every moment is a struggle for life. The tense scene, filled with primal horror, seems endless, leaving a deep impression on the viewer long after the film ends.

In Reality

The scene was filmed in the forests of British Columbia. Leo fought the bear in an area known as Derringer Forest. This filming location is on the east side of the Squamish River. This location is far from easily accessible; only a logging road leads to it, so not all movie fans can visit it.

The scene where Glass continues his epic journey through the wilderness. Unfortunately for him, the hero is constantly pursued by the Arikara. Cornered at the edge of an icy river, Glass has no choice but to dive into the freezing water to escape.

The scene was filmed at Kootenai Falls, located near the town of Libby in northwestern Montana. This natural location is a breathtaking spectacle of raging elements. Powerful streams of water roar down rocky ledges, creating a dramatic landscape perfectly suited for filming intense scenes against a backdrop of wild nature.
