The plot of the second film about grumpy old men revolves around how John and Max decide to save their beloved fishing tackle shop from being turned into an Italian restaurant. The new owner of the shop, who catches Max's attention, turns out not to be so easy to deter from her intended path.
The film was shot primarily in the state of Minnesota, which provided diverse locations to create the atmosphere of a small American town. Principal photography took place in the cities of Afton and Saint Paul. In Saint Paul, Cooper's Foods was used as the grocery store, and the homes of the main characters John Gustafson and Max Goldman were located on East Hyacinth Avenue. This area is known for its typical Midwestern architecture. In Minneapolis, the facade of Club 331 was used for the bar Slipperys. Scenes taking place at the animal shelter were filmed in Afton, a quiet and cozy town known for its natural beauty.

Filming Locations:

Grocery Store

In the Movie

Scene where Grandpa Gustafson, despite his age, does not miss the opportunity to enjoy life when visiting the grocery store. More bacon! A pack of cigarettes with pleasure! This shows with what zest (and perhaps carelessness) he approaches life.

The scene was filmed at Cooper's Foods grocery store in Saint Paul, Minnesota. This local store sold everything from fresh kosher meat to toys and household goods. Unfortunately, it is now closed.

Bakery

In the Movie

Scene where Jake and Melanie visit the bakery to evaluate the wedding cake chosen by their fathers. The cake looks beautiful, but, as always, there are surprises. The 'cherry' on this festive dessert is a figurine of Melanie hooked by Jake's fishing lure, a clear reference to their fathers' shared passion for fishing.
