Locations used in this region include Albuquerque, Carrizozo, and Santa Fe — the historic state capital. Their vast dry plains, views of small desert towns, and lack of urban bustle emphasized the post-apocalyptic atmosphere. Carrizozo, a charming town in Lincoln County, also became an important element of the shoot, adding another dimension to the film with its high desert landscapes. Dirk Norris, a representative of the New Mexico Film Office, noted that this small town with a population of about 1,000 has a unique visual appeal and can be adapted to any production needs.

The scene was filmed at Albuquerque Studios in the Mesa del Sol area. The studio complex, which includes production offices, eight sound stages, and a backlot, provided the versatile conditions needed to bring the desert and dystopian world of 'The Book of Eli' to life.

The scene was filmed on 12th Street in Carrizozo, New Mexico. Founded in 1899, the town of Carrizozo played an important role as a major railroad hub for Lincoln County, contributing to its rapid development in the early 20th century. Due to its unique historical and architectural appearance, the town became an attractive location for filmmakers. Films such as 'Gambit' (2012) and 'The Wild Love' (1995) were also shot here.

Alcatraz Island

In Reality

The scene was filmed near Alcatraz Island, known for its former federal prison. From the 1850s, a military fort was located here, but the island gained its greatest fame from the prison built in 1910–1912. Initially used as a military prison for the U.S. Army, it later became a federal correctional facility. Although the prison closed in 1963, the island was later turned into a museum open to visitors, allowing them to explore its rich history.
