Despite the film's plot unfolding in North America, the main shooting took place in the UK. For exterior scenes, locations in Perth and Kinross, Scotland were chosen — with their harsh and picturesque landscapes that perfectly conveyed the atmosphere of isolation and tension. The interior cave scenes were not filmed in real conditions for safety reasons. Instead, they were recreated at Pinewood Studios near London. The sets were meticulously designed, including a lighting system — the light source in the frame often came from the heroes' helmet lamps, which enhanced the feeling of claustrophobia. Additional scenes were shot in Ashridge Park in Buckinghamshire, whose quiet and eerie forest landscape fit perfectly into the film's atmosphere.
