The filming of the picture took place from August 9 to December 20, 1955, and required 75 shooting days. During this time, about 680,000 feet (approximately 210,000 meters) of film were shot, from which 25,734 feet (7,844 meters) of final material were eventually edited. The production budget was just under $6 million. Work was carried out in 112 locations spanning 13 countries, and 140 sets were built. Producer Michael Todd noted that the film crew personally visited all the countries shown in the film, including England, France, Spain, India, East Pakistan, Thailand, and Japan. According to Time magazine, the project involved 68,894 people, including extras, and 7,959 animals, among which were ostriches, skunks, elephants, fighting bulls, macaques, horses, donkeys, American bison, Rocky Mountain sheep, and even a sacred cow trained to eat flowers on command. The costume department spent $410,000 on making 74,685 costumes and 36,092 accessories. Unofficially, this is a record number of costumes for a single Hollywood production.

The scene was filmed on Rotten Row, a wide path running along the southern border of Hyde Park in London. Originally created in the 17th century as a royal route for horseback riding, Rotten Row became a symbol of the social life of the British aristocracy. In the Victorian era, members of high society strolled here, and the place gained a reputation as one of the most prestigious promenades in the city.

The scene was filmed at the Plaza Mayor in Chinchón, the historic central square of a small town in the Madrid region of Spain. This square has traditionally been used as an arena for bullfights and folk festivals, and its layout makes it easy to recreate the atmosphere of a 19th-century Spanish province.

In Reality

The scene was filmed on the Lansdowne Bridge, which spans the Indus River in the city of Sukkur, about 150 miles north of Hyderabad, Pakistan. This railway bridge was built in 1889 under British administration and named after the then Viceroy of India, Lord Lansdowne. The bridge is an outstanding example of late 19th-century engineering—a steel arch structure with two main spans and massive stone supports. It connects the city of Sukkur with Bukkur Island, where an old fort is located, and still remains a functioning transport artery.
