The scene was filmed at Diablo Canyon, also known as Caja del Rio Canyon. It is a rugged volcanic plateau covering about 84,000 acres in northern Santa Fe County, New Mexico. The canyon is a popular local rock climbing area. Since 2004, a campaign has been underway to develop recreational trails in Caja. The goal is to expand the use of Caja, not to replace livestock grazing. The trail system is used mainly by mountain bikers and horseback riders.

It was expanded and reworked for subsequent shoots. In 2007, during the filming of "3:10 to Yuma," a significant number of buildings were added to the set. A fire caused by careless use of pyrotechnics during the filming of the 1999 movie "Wild Wild West" destroyed the set. It was completely rebuilt. The ranch was originally called "Cook Ranch." Later it was renamed "Cook Ranch." In 2001, the estate was bought by fashion designer Tom Ford. He changed the name to Cerro Pelon Ranch. He also used it to build ultra-modern houses and structures. Ford sold the ranch in 2021. It was first listed for sale in 2016 for $75 million, but later the price was reduced to $48 million.
