It is located near Kaw City, a town situated on a hill overlooking the lake. The lake is known for its dam, construction of which was authorized in 1962. The original Kaw City was covered by the waters of Lake Kaw in 1975. The town was rebuilt about two miles west of the old site in the late 1960s.
