The river flows into what was once the Zuiderzee. It is one of the most famous castles in the Netherlands. The castle was built by Count Floris V in 1280. The count was kidnapped and imprisoned in his own castle. He was killed in 1296. By 1300 the castle was destroyed. A hundred years later, the castle was rebuilt on the same site according to the same plan by Albert I, Duke of Bavaria.
