The scene was filmed at Aldwych - a closed London Underground station located in the Westminster area of Central London. It opened in 1907 with the name Strand, after the street on which it is located, and was the terminus of a short Piccadilly line branch from Holborn, left over after the merger of two railway schemes. The station building is located near the intersection of the Strand and Surrey Street, next to Aldwych. During its existence, the branch was the subject of a number of unrealized proposals for extension, which would have extended the tunnels through the station southwards, usually to Waterloo. Wartime efficiency measures led to the branch being temporarily closed on 22 September 1940, shortly after the start of the Blitz, and the Westminster City Council partially equipped it as an air-raid shelter. The tunnels between Aldwych and Holborn were used to store exhibits from the British Museum, including the Elgin Marbles. Because it was a separate section of the London Underground, closed during weekday peak hours, Aldwych station and the branch from Holborn were popular locations for filming scenes set in the Underground, even before their closure. After the branch closed in 1994, it continued to be used in film shoots, with the station appearing both as itself and, with appropriate signage, as other stations on the network.
