It was built between late 1930 and early 1931, designed by S. Charles Lee and Samuel Tilden Norton. Its construction cost $1.5 million. Charlie Chaplin helped finance the construction to ensure it was ready for the premiere of his film "City Lights" in January 1931. After the Los Angeles Theatre closed its doors to the public in 1994, it stood empty for many years. It can now be rented as a venue for special events.

The scene was filmed at The Applebee's restaurant chain was founded by Bill and TJ Palmer in 1980. They wanted to "create a restaurant that would resemble a neighborhood pub and offer friendly service along with quality food at a lower price than most competitors." The name they came up with for their concept was Appleby, but it turned out to be already trademarked. On July 16, 2007, IHOP Corp. announced that it had agreed to buy Applebee's International.

Albert Lansburgh and is equipped with a mighty Wurlitzer organ installed in 1928. In 1989, a $3 million renovation began. It is used for television shows such as America's Got Talent.
